The Special Forces Assessment and Selection (SFAS) and Special Forces Qualification (Q course) courses are accordingly tough and have a high attrition rate. 300 potential Green Berets at a time attend the SFAS course which is held 4 times a year.

The best chance of anyone ever becoming a Green Beret is through the 18X program. In my SFAS class there were roughly 450 people. Around 100 were 18X's, around 100 officers and the rest randoms from the big army. We had roughly 120 selected with about 50-60 being 18X, 30-40 being officers and the rest were randoms from the big army.
